Climatology

The Climatology Group studies past and present weather and climate variations. As part of international projects, it participates in the digitization of historical climate data and develops data products using numerical and statistical methods. Climate models are also employed. Based on this work, the group investigates large-scale climate and weather variability, as well as the influence of external factors such as solar activity and volcanic eruptions on weather and climate over the past 100–400 years. The unit also includes the «Bern Urban Climate» research group, which studies the interactions between cities, the atmosphere, and climate change. A particular focus is on urban heat islands and potential adaptation measures. For more information, visit the «Bern Urban Climate» website.
