Welcome to the Urban Climate research group of Bern
Welcome to the ‘Bern Urban Climate’ research group. We are part of the Climatology Group at the Institute of Geography and the ‘Climate, Cities & Health’ cluster at the Oeschger Centre for Climate Research (OCCR).
The aim of our research is to gain a better understanding of the complex interactions between cities, the atmosphere and climate change, thereby contributing to climate- and socially-sustainable urban development.
Our main areas of research:
- urban heat islands;
- cost-effective and interdisciplinary measurement and modelling methods;
- multi-method effectiveness analyses of cooling measures;
- collaborations with city authorities and other stakeholders;
- awareness-raising and educational initiatives on heat and health;
- innovative visualisation and communication tools;
- Bern and other cities in Switzerland and Europe.
We disseminate our findings to the scientific community, society and the political sphere through publications, courses, excursions, heat walks, lectures, media features, visualisation platforms and teaching materials.
