Economic Geography Studio 2025: Economic geography meets futurology: socio-economic scenarios for peripheral regions of Switzerland
In this block course, students learned about qualitative methods of scenario development. Based on existing scenarios for Switzerland, they developed qualitative socio-economic future scenarios for peripheral regions, applying various scenario techniques. For the scenarios they developed, they analysed how the economic and geographical context of the region would change if a so-called wildcard event occurred in the region, i.e. an event with a very low probability of occurrence but major impacts, such as a natural disaster or a pandemic.
The methods and techniques of scenario development can be used not only for research, but also for many other purposes, such as the development of corporate strategies or community goals. The students thus learned methods and techniques that they can use in their professional activities during and after their studies.
