Ich bin feministische politische und Kulturgeographin und erforsche Affekte und Emotionen. Meine Forschung bringt feministische politisch-geographische Arbeiten, (queer-) feministische Affekttheorien, Geographien des Körpers und der Intimität, digitale Geographien und empirische Forschungen in Aserbaidschan und Kirgistan zusammen.

Von einer intersektionalen Forschungsperspektive ausgehend, möchte ich verstehen wie Räume der Intimität, Emotionen und alltägliche Erfahrungen von Identitätspolitiken wie zum Beispiel Nationalismus miteinander verwoben sind. In meiner Doktorarbeit (2017) habe ich das Konzept des affektiven Nationalismus entwickelt und untersucht wie Gefühle nationaler Zugehörigkeit in banalen Alltagsbegegnungen zwischen verschiedenen Körpern, Objekten, Praktiken und Orten entstehen. Das Konzept des "global intimate" (Mountz & Hyndman 2006), das heisst, dass intime Körper- und Lebenserfahrungen und globale Ströme von Körpern, Technologien und Wissen miteinander verbunden sind, inspiriert meine aktuelle Forschung zu digitalen Geographien der Intimität. In dieser Forschung untersuche ich zum Beispiel die Rolle von Affekten/Emotionen für die Herstellung von Wissensräumen zum intimen Körper auf sozialen Medien. Mehr Informationen zu meinem aktuellen Forschungsprojekt “Eine digitale Geographie marginalisierter Sexualitäten in Kirgisistan” finden sich auf Instagram.

Ausserdem experimentiere ich gerne mit qualitativen und ethnographischen Forschungsmethodologien in der Geographie. Ich interessiere mich insbesondere für die Grenzen, Möglichkeiten und Herausforderungen affektualer Methodologien und die feministisch-geographische Onlineforschung.

Eine digitale Geographie marginalisierter Sexualitäten in Kirgistan

Beschreibung

Überall auf der Welt identifizieren Traditionalist*innen und Rechtspopulist*innen die Vielfalt und Gleichheit von Sexualitäten als Gefahr für die nationale und kulturelle Integrität. Nicht-heteronormative Sexualitäten - seien es sexuelle Praktiken, sexuelle Identitäten, sexuelle Erfahrungen oder Darstellungen von verschiedenen Sexualitäten - werden bedroht, tabuisiert und stigmatisiert. In Kirgisistan, dem Forschungskontext des Projekts, erleben vor allem unverheiratete junge Frauen und lesbische, schwule, bisexuelle und transgender (LGBT) Menschen Gewalt und Scham in Bezug auf ihre sexuellen Praktiken und/oder Identitäten. Das Stigma um nicht-heterosexuelle und nicht-binäre Sexualitäten und das Sextabu für unverheiratete Frauen schränkt auch den Zugang zu Sexualitätswissen und die gegenseitige Unterstützung durch Peers ein. Als Reaktion darauf mobilisieren Menschen, die aufgrund ihrer Sexualität an den Rand gedrängt werden, zunehmend Social-Media-Anwendungen (z.B. Instagram), um Wissen über nicht-normative Sexualitäten zu produzieren und zu verbreiten. Die Analyse der Produktion, Verhandlung und Verbreitung von Wissen über marginalisierte Sexualitäten in sozialen Medienräumen gibt Einblicke in die kreative Nutzung von Social-Media-Plattformen. Meine Analyse ermöglicht auch ein besseres Verständnis des Potenzials sozialer Medien im Hinblick auf die Verteidigung der sexuellen Vielfalt und der Gleichberechtigung von Sexualitäten weltweit.

Becoming a virgin: bodies, technologies and affectual geographies of the reconstruction of the hymen
Laufzeit 2017-2018
Beschreibung The project hypothesizes hymen repair as an emergent transcultural phenomenon that reproduces female virginity as a global commodity. It explores how technologies of hymen surgery produce corporeal geographies, putting sexualized organs and bodies into circulation as commodities in the global reproductive economy. Specifically, the project is interested in unraveling the different emotional and affectual mechanisms substantiating powerful narratives around virginity, femininity, female sexuality and pleasure.

Clad in hope: affective geographies of the bridal dress

Beschreibung Despite an observed decline in marriage rates, the heterosexual wedding remains popular around the world. While many communities grant the status of an adult only after consummating a heterosexual wedding, marriage also seems to promise future happiness. The white bridal dress, in particular, plays a key role in attracting feelings of hope, desire and joy during wedding celebrations. This project aims to develop a critical understanding of the affective dynamics at play in conflating marriage with happiness.

Affective Nationalism: Bodies, Materials and Encounters with the Nation in Azerbaijan

Beschreibung The project unpacks the ways in which nationalism – understood as a feeling of national belonging and alienation – unfolds in moments of affective encounter between different bodies, objects, practices and places. Based on eight months of ethnographic field work in Azerbaijan, consisting mainly of observant participation within families, field notes from attendance at public holidays and commemoration ceremonies and qualitative interviews, the project develops the concept of affective nationalism - the banal affirmation of the national emerging in moments of encounter between different bodies, objects, practices and places. In times nationalist and populist narratives of good and evil, right and wrong and outside and inside gain ground, the project proposes to focus on moments of bodily encounter, on bodies’ different capacities to affect and to be affected and on the spatial and temporal contextualities of national becomings, in order to understand the persistence of nationalism.

Beschreibung The project focuses the practices, organisation and guiding narratives of environmental NGOs in the South Caucasus Republic of Azerbaijan. Drawing primarily on ethnographic and qualitative interview material from four month of field research, the study experiments with a qualitative network analysis and presents novel insights on civil society activities in the fields of nature conversation, ornithology and environmental justice in Azerbaijan.
