Bachelor and Master Thesis Projects

Sedimententnahme vom Boot aus
Coring platform to take sediment cores on lake Amsoldingen, Autumn 2022 © S. Schouten, 2022

MSc and BSc Thesis projects (BSc and MSc Geography and MSc Climate Sciences) are possible in all of the ongoing research projects.

We offer in general two types of Theses:

  • Original experimental work with lake sediments and other environmental matrices
  • Analysis of existing paleoclimate data sets and regional synthesis’

Prerequisites:

  • Experience of working in a lab (introductory level)
  • Knowledge on geochemical cycles and processes
  • Interest in properties and fate studies of organic micropollutants (PFAS, pesticides, ...)
  • Knowledge on statistical analysis and programming is advantageous

The themes may be oriented towards environmental reconstructions of pollution history, nutrient cycling, land-use and cover changes, among others. We also offer Thesis projects in the field of hyperspectral image analysis of lake sediments, which is a combination of lake sediment analysis and remote sensing/GIS techniques. The students learn to design their own research project, basic and advanced analytical techniques with practical laboratory work, (advanced) statistical techniques for data analysis (with R).

If you are interested in a Thesis in the Paleolimnology Group, please send a short statement of motivation and interest to Prof. Martin Grosjean or Prof. Aurea Chiaia-Hernández.
