The goal for my PhD is to assess the relevance of recurrence versus blocking for the formation of persistent surface extremes (persistent hot, dry and wet conditions) and whether these flow patterns might change with anthropogenic climate change. Part of my PhD also consists in searching for a statistical link between persistent summer weather in Europe and tropical convection. Findings are expected to be highly relevant for skillful (sub-)seasonal prediction and for assessing climate change hazards.

I work within the PERSIST-EUROPE project, which seeks to get a better understanding of the dynamical processes controlling persistent flow conditions over Europe in summer for their relation to extreme weather events.
