Bettina Schaefli stammt aus St. Gallen. Ihr Studium des Umweltingenieurwesens führte sie an die École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), wo sie 2005 im Bereich Hydrologie promovierte. Ihre Doktorarbeit zum Thema Klimawandel und Wasserkraftproduktion stellt eine der ersten modellbasierten Studien in diesem Themenbereich dar und prägte die Schweizer Forschung und Bettina Schaeflis akademische Karriere noch heute. Sie vertiefte ihren Forschungsschwerpunkt in hydrologischer Modellentwicklung während ihres zweijährigen Postdoc-Aufenthalts an der Universität Potsdam und an der University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (USA). Diese Spezialisierung führte sie während ihrer Zeit als Assistenzprofessorin an der TU Delft (Niederlande) fort, und erweiterte ihre Arbeit auf grössere räumliche Skalen und auf verschiedene Klimaregionen.

Im Jahr 2010 kam Bettina Schaefli aufgrund eines Schweizer National Fonds (SNF)-Projektes zur Karriereförderung nach Lausanne zurück, wo sie zuerst an der EPFL und seit 2016 als Assistenzprofessorin SNF an der Universität Lausanne lehrte und forschte. Bettina Schaefli arbeitet als Expertin in einem der acht Swiss Competence Center for Energy Research mit und die zukünftige Entwicklung der Schweizer Wasserkraftressourcen nimmt eine wichtige Stellung in ihrer Forschung ein. Als Editorin einer der meistzitierten wissenschaftlichen Zeitschriften (Hydrology and Earth System Sciences) und als Präsidentin der Hydrologischen Kommission der Schweiz engagiert sich Bettina Schaefli im Bereich «open science», die zum Ziel hat, wissenschaftliche Ergebnisse und Methoden für alle frei zugänglich zu machen.

 

Die zentrale Fragestellung ihrer Forschungsarbeit ist die Quantifizierung und Vorhersage von hydrologischen Prozessen, zur nachhaltigen Nutzung von Wasserressourcen sowie zum Schutz vor Extremereignissen.
