Master Thesis

Extraction of seasonal changes in snow covered area (SCA) and their relation to wet-snow avalanche activity

This Master thesis is a joint project between the SLF Davos (Federal Institute for snow and Avalanche Research) and the University of Bern. By evaluating images taken by automatic cameras in the mountains around Davos the goal is to quantify seasonal changes in SCA, relate those to local meteorological data and establish a link to wet-snow avalanche activity in spring. If a clear link between SCA and wet-snow avalanches can be found, this would mean that satellite based SCA products can be used as an indication for wet-snow avalanches.
