Microplastics are a global pollutant. Currently, however, there are very few studies on terrestrial ecosystems and the concentrations and composition of microplastics in soils with different uses is almost unknown. There are only few studies on the effects of microplastics on soil organisms, plants and their uptake into the food chain. Therefore, research is needed to assess the effects of microplastic in the soil. 

Many trace metals are essential micronutrients but may also act as pollutants in high concentrations. Soils are the boundary layer of geosphere and atmosphere and habitat for the biosphere and thus of great importance and high scientific intrest.

Stable and radiogenic isotopes are important tools to improve knowledge about biogeochemical fate of elements in the environment. Field and lab studies are performed to get new insights into biogeochemical behaviour of trace and major elements in the soil system.
