My research focus is on hailstorms in Switzerland and adjacent regions.

The aim of the project is to investigate the hail distribution and frequency using weather radars. Spatial and temporal distribution of hail (annual, monthly, diurnal cycle), as well as anomalies and weather type dependence are investigated for the period 2002-2015. To this purpose two radar-based hail algorithms, namely the Probability Of Hail (POH) and the Maximum Expected Severe Hail Size (MESHS), have been reprocessed and verified with independent datasets. POH estimates the probability of falling hail on the ground. MESHS provides an estimate of the maximal hailstone size on the ground. Both algorithms use 3D radar parameters and numerical weather prediction data. They are used operationally in several meteorological offices (e.g. MeteoSwiss) for hail diagnosis.

In a second part of the project, potential precursors for hail formation as well as the interaction with complex orography are investigated using data from different sources.
